About
Serve Bay St. Louis

It was a lot easier to vote in 2017 in Bay St. Louis!

As a public service, volunteers working with the  Shoofly Magazine  launched this non-partisan  website in December 2016. Our civic supporters included the Hancock Chamber and the Sea Coast Echo.

This site hosted an online Candidates Forum and complete Voters Info for the 2017 elections in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Candidates Forum

Our non-partisan forum for Mayor and City Council candidates - had two parts:

  • Part One:   Candidates had an opportunity to submit their photos and a short bio to be posted on this website, free of charge.   100% of city council candidates participated, and 3 out of 4 mayoral candidates.
  • Part Two:  We sent a list of questions to the candidates who participated in Part One.  The questions were chosen by our volunteers from those submitted by local citizens.  Candidates' answers were posted on this site.  There was no cost to candidates, who were able to reach thousands of voters with their views on many issues.

Voter Information

  • Voter registration information
  • Election timeline
  • Maps of wards (or districts) and voting locations
  • Times and places of any non-partisan live voter forums (TBA)
  • Basic "job description"  and salaries of mayor and council, and information about our type of city government.
  • Thinking of running for office? Here's how to toss your hat in the ring!

Our information will be garnered from a variety of official sources, including the Hancock County Circut Clerk's office, the Mississippi Secretary of State's website, and other governmental sources.

Why an Online Forum?

  • Our volunteers believe that people who want to serve the public shouldn't have to go into debt to reach voters - or be forced to accept large campaign donations.
  • We believe if citizens have access to a convenient, non-biased and time-saving way to make sound voting decisions, they'll use it.
  • And finally, we believe that big changes start small.  If local governments become healthier, the country will flourish as well.  What better place to start than Bay St. Louis, a city known for its creative approach to life?
